About Handmade NW

Our focus is grounded in Cooperative* concepts.

Locally founded! Locally organized! Local Artisans!

For the ARTISTS, by the ARTISTS! We are a community of local crafters, artisans and artists who focus on promoting unique handcrafted items which you can purchase directly from their creators.

* A cooperative is defined by the International Co-operative Alliance's Statement on the Co-operative Identity as an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. A cooperative may also be defined as a business owned and controlled equally by the people who use its services or who work at it. Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy and equality. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. Such legal entities have a range of unique social characteristics. Membership is open, meaning that anyone who satisfies certain non-discriminatory conditions may join. Economic benefits are distributed proportionally according to each member's level of economic interest in the cooperative, for instance by a dividend on sales or purchases.

What is the Handmade Craft Movement?

Director Faythe Levine traveled to 15 cities (including Portland), interviewing 80 crafters. Handmade Nation, the first documentary film about the indie craft movement, premiered in Portland on April 4 - 5, 2009 at the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

You can see a little preview of the film over here and buy the DVD staring November 3rd, 2009 on the fabulous Buy Olympia website.
